2011 North Sails Young 88 Owners Champs on this weekend at Bucks
|
The North Sails Young 88 Owners Champs will be contested by fifteen boats this coming weekend on the waters bounded by Browns Island, Rangitoto and the city. The Owners Champs require owners to be 'drivers' and is a Corinthian counterpart to the white hot competition of the professional crews battling it out in the Harken Y88 Nationals held in April. This hardly alters the caliber of what is expected to be a very competitive fleet: Entrants in the 2011 North Sails Young 88 Owners Champs include: Outrageous - Ross Masters Flash Gordon - Doug Eades Raging Hormones - Russell Hopper Slipstream III - Nathan Williams War Machine – Mike Leyland Panama Jack – Andrew Fraser Young Magic – Mason Pepper Dangerzone – Ant Crossan Sailor Moon – Jacko van Deventer Skitzo – Rick Hackett Undercover – Lincoln Fraser Sweeney Todd – Vaughn Clark Voodoo - Leigh Miller Medium Dry - Anthony Leighs Sister Moonshine - Guy Pilkington The event is being run by Bucklands Beach Yacht Club with PRO Teresa Tootill and team setting up for a maximum six windward leeward races each day. The social side has also been given a lift this year with an informal 'debrief' in the club Saturday night to be run by our event sheriff 'The Butcher', a bit of rugby watching and a more formal sponsor’s prize giving on Sunday night. The North Sails Owners Champs marks the start of a very full season of racing and social events for the 88’s which include The Coastal Classic, North Sails’ Client Coaching Clinic, Kawau Island Yacht Club Anniversary Regatta, Bay of Island Sailing Week, 30th Anniversary Picnic and lots more. This is a great start to a season that will see the class celebrate its 30th anniversary in December. About the Young 88 The Young 88, about 30 feet in length and with a fractional rig, is a popular multipurpose boat that offers speed and agility for racing, with space and comfort for cruising. The first mould was built by Roger Land in the 1980s, and since then 158 have been built. Of these, 77 are still in the Auckland area, 9 in Northland, 13 in the rest of the North Island, 19 in the South Island, and 38 have been exported. www.young88.org.nz
