18 footers Mark Foy series Britain and USA lead

'18 footers Carnac Mark Foy 2009 - Day 2'    Franck Gicquiaud ©
Mark Foy Trophies series, Carnac,France 28 June-4th July.

With three Australians sweeping the placings in the first race (respectively Grant Rollerson on Slam, John Winning Junior on Appliances Online and Jonathan Whitty on Panasonic), sailed in a very light wind, it seemed Australian domination way likely at the Mark Foy Trophy.

But a Briton and an American lead after Day 2, the first day of racing on Quiberon Bay.

On the first race start, good front line positions were hard to get and the first mark rounding was tight.

Grant Rollerson was first around, closely followed by two more Australians John Wining Junior and Jonathan Whitty and these crews took the podium places. Britain's Rob Greenhalgh, on Benny, was slow off the line but finished , just in front of Howie Hamlin. (USA).

For the second race, a very tight start again with the disqualification of Grant Rollerson, slightly over the line.

The British crew aboard Asko, skippered by Dan Wilson were fast away and led at the top mark, ahead of Howie Hamlin and current European champions Team Pindar.

Andy Richards was overhauled by Greenhalgh who finally took the lead as the wind lifted. Howie Hamlin and Dan Wilson on Asko were fading but they held their positions .

Greenhalgh won the race sailing away underlining that he is the helmsman to beat in this regatta and that his time on the big Volvo Ocean racers has not hurt at all.

However there is still a long way to go, the races being competed in a light wind, largely penalizing the heavy crews.

If the wind lifts the Australian are likely to come back into series.
