America's Cup: Another win for Oracle Team USA on Day 9
Fri, 20 Sep 2013

Oracle Team USA claimed another victory on Thursday in the 34th America’s Cup on San Francisco Bay. Skipper Jimmy Spithill and crew crossed the line in front of Emirates Team New Zealand to win Race 12 – the lone race of the day. Race 13 was postponed due to high winds.

Oracle Team USA moved into position during the pre-start of Race 12 to get the jump off the starting line. After rounding Mark 2 in front by 11 seconds, the teams split the course on the third leg. Oracle Team USA held on during a quick upwind Leg 3, foiling at speeds over 30 knots, and never relinquished the lead to win by 31 seconds.

'We were able to get a nice jump off the line, and from there Ben [Ainslie] and Tom [Slingsby] sailed a very nice race – up the beat they had some tough decisions to make,' said Spithill. 'The way the guys were sailing the boat was the best they’ve sailed it. Upwind, to be foiling in that breeze, was pretty impressive. There were zero mistakes, so it was a very satisfying race.'

Race 13 was less than two minutes from starting when the wind speed limit of 20.3 knots was reached, forcing it to be postponed. The race has been rescheduled for Friday at 1:15 pm PT.

Oracle Team USA now has two points in the series. Emirates Team New Zealand maintains the overall lead at 8-2 in points and 8-4 in wins. The winner of the 34th America’s Cup is the first team to win nine points.

'Through a lot of hard work, and through our design, engineering and boat building teams, we’ve been able to improve the performance of our boat, to the point now where we think we’re very competitive around the race track. Certainly the guys sailing believe we can win it – we believe we’ve got a great boat, we’ve improved it, and we haven’t finished yet,' Spithill said.
