Melges 20 Gold Cup - First round lead for Mascalzone Latino Jr
Sun, 4 Nov 2012
At the 2012 Audi Melges 20 Gold Cup, Mascalzone Latino Jr. sailed by Achille Onorato and Lorenzo Bressani took the lead with a 5-6-1-5 punch. The weather conditions improved dramatically from yesterday’s severe storm. All four races schedule for the day were sailed and the sailors took full advantage of a fantastic westerly breeze of 6-14 knots with four different teams capturing a victory.
Mascalzone Latino, Jr., helmed by Achille Onorato, winner of Coppa Challenge Sergio Capolino and the Gold Cup warm up round, was very fast on the first day of racing despite a shifty 8-12 knots and frustrating sea conditions.
Onorato finished the day with a margin of three points over second place finisher Fremito d’Arja sailed by Dario Levi and Andrea Casale with a strong 11-2-4-3 run. Team Karma sailed by Michele Paoletti and helmed by world champion skipper Enrico Pegoraro pressed the leaders all day with a 3-15-8-1 finish. Candida Sailing Team owned by Alessio Marinelli, with tactician Branko Brcin held a strong fourth place finish in the last race of the day after placing thirteenth in race three which helped contribute to their success in the Audi Melges 20 sailing season.
Other stars of the day include 2011 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series Champion Luca Domenici and Benedetto Giallongo on Notaro Team, defending Gold Cup Champion Alessandro Rombelli on Stig with tactician Jonathan McKee, Federico Albano’s 3menda Giulio Desiderato-Trani, and the best Neapolitan team Pecceré in the fleet sailed by Mirko De Falco and Guglielmo Giordano.
The Audi Melges 20 Gold Cup will continue tomorrow morning at 10:30. Despite the forecasted light air conditions, the race committee hopes to add another four races to the scoreboard as they work to achieve and complete the scheduled ten race series. After race six, a discard goes into effect.
