Last weekend VIODA (Victorian International Optimist Dinghy Association) conducted the first ever all girls Optimist dinghy camp at Black Rock Yacht Club. The weekend was an absolute success with lots of fun and smiles shared among sailors, coaches and parents alike.

26 girls aged between 8 and 14 from all over the State attended the weekend which offered a range of both on and off the water activities and experiences in an informal setting.

The weekend was highlighted with a special guest appearance from Jessica Watson, who spoke about her own sailing adventures and provided numerous autographs and photo opportunities!

Perfect sailing conditions prevailed on Saturday allowing for a full day of on water coaching. This was followed by dinner and a question and answer session with head coach Oli Tweddell and the female coaches Eliza Solly, Anna Philip and Tess Lloyd. The girls were completely engaged by recounts from the coaches of their own sailing journeys and no doubt many of the girls will be inspired to continue sailing and strive to achieve their own dreams.

Feedback from the girls and parents has been overwhelmingly positive and it is hoped that this will be the first of many events for girls.

VIODA wishes to thank Oli Tweddell, Black Rock Yacht Club, Yachting Victoria and all the parents that made this weekend a possibility.
