Surfing in the Bird

by Rob Kothe and the Sail-World Team on 5 Oct 2012
Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin will be out to upset Loki - Bird Island Yacht Race 2012 Andrea Francolini Photography http://www.afrancolini.com/
Having lost a Sword of orion rig in a Bird Island Race of yesteryear, (its not a great feeling, we were just two nautical miles from the Island, ) it’s interesting to look at the forecast for the 2012 Bird Island Race.

With the BOM issuing a dangerous surf conditions warning, it seems that Stephen Ainsworth's Loki, Syd Fischer's Ragamuffin and the rest of the fleet will have a little 'on' tonight.

A great report from Will Ryan about the Australian Match Racing titles, in which Ashlen Rooklyn won back to back Australian Open Titles, while Krystal Weir secured her first Women's Title on the waters of Port Philip Bay from Sandringham Yacht Club on Sunday. Competitors were met with the best conditions of the event, with the breeze getting lighter as the day progressed allowing the teams to race with full sail configuration ensuring close racing and fantastic tactical duels.

Bob Fisher, The Fish updates us on the America's Cup AC45 regatta in San Francisco. Bob is going to spend a lot of time there over the next 12 months. Come the final event Richard Gladwell, Rob Kothe and Jedda Murphy from Sail-World NZ, Australia and UK Europe will be on the water at what is promising to be a sensational event.

Technology moves on and Marine Auctions in Queensland is now amongst the global leaders. John Curnow has been talking to Adrian Seiffert of Marine Auctions.

‘Marine Auctions have been reviewing moving online for around 18 months before commencing. It’s a far cry from the early days when they made and physically sent out expensive brochures. Interestingly, there are very few dedicated marine auction services around the globe today.

‘We'll have both types of online auction as we expand the service. There will be those timed to run for just one week and also fully live and in real time, so there are no issues running them concurrently. The latter will continue to have our selection limited to no more than 40 or 50 boats.’

The first live online and simultaneous bidding auction will be held at the Rivergate International Boat Show from fifth to October 7th, 2012.
