Student Yachting World Cup - UCD Sailing Club to represent Ireland

2014 marks the third year in a row that UCD Sailing Club has represented Ireland at the Student Yachting World Cup. This year the event is hosted in La Rochelle, and it is the peak of international college sailing. UCD won in 2012 and are aiming to bring the trophy back to UCD after the French claimed it in 2013. The event is being raced in Grand Surprise, and UCD Team Ireland will be racing against 14 other countries.

The team this year is led once again by helm Philip Doran. On tactics and mainsheet trim is Rory Lynch, with Ben Fusco and Sophie Murphy on trim. Tara Flood is running the pit, while Cian Mollen and Will Byrne are on mast and bow. Vinnie Varley and Hannah Levins are the replacements, ready to step on board to give the team members a much needed rest over the six day event, which includes windward leewards, coastal races and a night race. It is an extremely experienced team, marking Ben's third year at SYWoC while Philip, Sophie and Vinnie are competing for the second time.

The team has been in intensive training for months now, including sessions on and off the water. The team has been training in UCD's High Performance Gym under the supervision of Marcus Wehr and fellow coaches. The team has been training in Dun Laoghaire with help, coaching and advice from a number of great local sailors. Research into the well-known sailing area of La Rochelle has also been key to the team's preparation.

The UCD team wouldn't be able to go without support from their loyal sponsors Energia and Bank of Ireland. CH Marine kitted the team out with gear for on the water. UCD Sport has also been instrumental in supporting the team over the years in all their endeavours. The Royal Irish Yacht Club has also been behind the club for years.

You can follow and support the team on their Facebook page and UCDSC's Twitter page, which will be frequently updated during the racing. The practice race starts on Thursday with full racing beginning on Friday, and running all the way to next Wednesday. Event ISA website
