Scorpion Nationals at Looe SC - Overall.

Dave Wade and Steve Hall have won the 2010 Scorpion Nationals. After a shaky start to the week they finished strongly with a string of top three results to claim the title ahead of John Mursell and Nick Keast. Chris Turner and Ben Rayner won three out of the last four races but inconsistency meant they had to settle for third.

Race 9. With the wind swinging to the South West the breeze was steadier and the waves built up enough to get some good surfing in. Up the first beat Barry Wolfenden and Melanie Titmus picked their lanes the best and led to the windward mark ahead of Tom Jeffcoate and Mark Hogan. Chris and Ben rounded in the top five while Dave and Steve and John and Nick were a couple further back. Allan and Chris Tyler were further back and later retired when they realised they couldn’t affect the outcome of the race.

Tom and Mark took the lead briefly until Chris and Ben took over on lap 2. Dave and Steve and John and Nick moved through to third and fourth. The gaps were close throughout and on the final beat Dave had let John get out into the left corner. With port tack lifted Dave had a nervous last 100 yards to the line but a final right hand shift brought him through comfortably in the end and John had to fight off Barry on the line.

Grabbing chances with both hands
Can bad weather actually lead to more sailing? There's been no getting away from the fact that it's been a pretty miserable start to 2024 weather-wise in the UK. February saw record rainfall (yes, I know we're famed for our rain over here), it's been seriously windy and generally chilly.
