The Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Fishbourne hosted a very successful Push the Boat Out Day on Saturday 16th May and counted over 72 separate boat trips in dinghies, cruisers and RIBS for their visitors who had all come down to have a go at sailing.
RVYC was just one of hundreds of clubs around the country which opened their doors to visitors as part of the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Push the Boat Out. The club open days offered nationwide sailing and windsurfing taster sessions to introduce newcomers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to these sports.
“We had a great day thanks to the huge efforts of so many of our club members,” said event organiser Steven Sheridan. “A number of visitors expressed interest in joining the club.”
The wind was a little strong to start the day so the organisers were thankful to their members who had cruising yachts and could take guests out onto the Solent under reduced sail. As the wind moderated, the club’s Wayfarer dinghy was brought into use and some kids went out in Pico dinghies and Optimists.
RIB rides were popular and it was good to able to demonstrate the contrast between a sedate ride up the creek and a blast out into the Solent.
“We had a great PTBO day at RVYC,” said Steven, “and were visited by Cat Ferguson and Susie Nation-Granger from the RYA.”
One visitor said “The club definitely came across as a friendly place to spend time. We went out on a trimaran boat, a great new experience for both me and my friend.”
