Coaching is a big part of the Red Bull Foiling Generation Search - Japan April 2015 Red Bull Extreme Racing
Double Olympic champions Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher have begun their search for the sailing stars of the future. The new series is called Red Bull Foiling Generation and began on April 17 in Wakayama, Japan.

Open to ambitious sailors aged 16–20, the global competition will give wings to promising talent in seven events in as many countries – Japan, UK, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Russia and France – with the winners of these national competitions going on to battle it out in the world final in late 2016.

“We are looking for the world’s best talents,” says Steinacher.

The event includes a novel new format, with four boats in distinct colours competing in knockout races for a place in the next round. The top two progress automatically, while the other two boats enter a lucky loser round.

Once the competition hits the quarter-final stage it will be a straight knockout though, before the semi-final and final ultimately decide which boat heads to the global final.

Watch the below video to discover more about the Flying Phantom class innovative catamarans, a two-person vessel capable of speeds up to 35 knots, that these battling teams will be using for the series.

However, there is plenty on offer even to those crews who do not make it through the earlier stages, as they will get the chance to be coached by Hagara and Steinacher prior to an event.

“We are offering outstanding young sailors a unique career path starting on foiling catamarans in Red Bull Foiling Generation, the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup and the Red Bull Sailing Team competing in the Extreme Sailing Series,” Steinacher adds.
