RS Feva Open at Hill Head, October 10th 2010.

This was autumn sailing at it’s near best. Good breeze, belting sunshine and great racing. With three races and no discards the 20 odd Fevas raced an outer loop trapezoidal course whilst the dozen Mirrors sharing the Open meeting sailed the inner loop first.

There were a great number of new faces there, more of whom shortly, but the racing at the front was tight and hard fought meaning that it really did go down to the wire and would all be decided on the last race. Hugo Tucker and Tim Collino got an early marker down when they powered through the fleet to take the first win from Adam and Lisa Kay. Becka Morris and Islay Grant were right in the mix for the first lap and fell away a little (did that twice!).

The wind was exceedingly shifty and variable in strength throughout the day coming off the land as it was. Hugo and Tim faltered a little as a single shift/hole did for their second race challenge whilst Anna Prescott and Jess Eales took up the front running batton. Paul and Jack Fisk found conditions much to their liking and got their noses in front of Anna and Jess with only boat lengths left before the leeward mark and then they held on for the top slot race finish. This left three boats on five points for the final race with one just one point further back. Showdown time!

Final race had Anna and Jess lead into the windward mark. This is however a 360 penalty according to the rule book and so Hugo and Tim pounced to take the lead. Anna amd Jess were fighting mightily with Adam and Lisa at this point but the slightest brush of a buoyancy aid against the bouy had the Lymington pair doing their second 360 of the race which left Adam and Lisa to hunt down Hugo and Tim. Had the race been just the two laps as per the previous two races the event would have been there for the young uns. However it wasn’t two laps and Adam and Lisa Kay (Warsash) sailed just that little better at all points of the last lap to take a well deserved victory and the overall spoils.

Second place was decided on a tiebreak with the decision going to Hugo and Tim as a result of their first place. Third were Anna and Jess with Paul and Jack claiming fourth. So to complete the top six we had Phoebe Warren and Lily Summers in fifth and sixth belonged to Becka Morris and Islay Grant.

Spot prizes were special and went first to best Hill Head boat Cameron Webber and Joseph Fenwick in eighth but then a very special award for perseverance one of the fleet newcomers. Samual Grade and Katie Prescott sailing a borrowed boat (the new one was still needing a trailer!) broke their tiller at the last mark and needed to reach 200m to the finish line. Samual steered all the way, in a F3, by holding the rudder stock cheeks in between both hands whilst facing backwards! Now that was worthy of a trophy!

Special mentions to for Max Matthews and Guy Rivington from Tudor SC in seveth overall and Josh Aldridge and Flyn Davies from Burnham-on-Crouch in 11th. Clear developments for youngsters as they get older and start moving from RS Teras into RS Fevas amongst others. Also great to see was so many Hill Head boats gracing the fleet.

So overall thoughts: fantastic event but my thoughts can be weird anyway and with my chairman’s hat on these increase exponentially. Most pleasing thing of all was the mother of a newcomer to the fleet saying that they had been very nervous of this first weekend event in the class. The training on Saturday (Hill Head always do a fantastic training day before the Open) and the Open on the Sunday were fabulous. Everybody in the class had been so welcoming, friendly and went out of their way to resolve any issues that they couldn’t have hoped for more. Now when you try to work to ensure that we have the most inclusive and friendly fleet in the country for all comers it just warms the cockles of your heart to hear someone say the things that were said. It made me a very happy bunny that we are doing something right!
