Overseas competitors dominate first four days of NZ Optimist Nationals

Eight countries are represented by 196 sailors competing in the Toyota Optimist Nationals, being staged at Mercury Bay, Whitianga on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsular, New Zealand, 50nm east of Auckland in straight line.

After seven races have been sailed in the regatta which is being led by Jayvee Buchanan (Charteris Bay, Christchurch and Murrays Bay, Auckland) who has won five races, and placed second and third in the other two, and leads a group of three Singapore sailors, and the first of two British sailors.

Next New Zealand sailor is Napier's Olivia Mackay, followed by two Australian sailors. Three Singapore sailors follow with the next New Zealand sailor William Linkhorn in 12th place.

Winds have been light since the start of the regatta, resulting in the race schedule being well behind plan. 196 competitors are sailing in the Open fleet, with a further 88 sailors competing for the Green fleet (first year) title. Scott Mckenzie (Kohimaramara), leads from Jonathan Weston and Grace Hawtin.
