Ocean Crusaders and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

by Ian Thomson on 31 Mar 2013
The New fleet of 70 footers are hitting the water Ian Thomson
The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race offers a unique opportunity; the chance to pit yourself against some of the most infamous sailing conditions on the planet, taking on waves as big as buildings while racing against eleven other teams for eleven months.

Founded by Sir Robin Knox Johnson, the first person to sail solo non stop around the world, this epic event is the longest ocean race in the world covering a distance of 40,000nm. Racing aboard 12 identical 70ft custom built ocean racing yachts, this is not a race for professional racers. They are crewed by everyday people. Lawyers, plumbers, hairdressers and housewives all train extensively for their role and then take to the ocean and the elements.

The race has always had an environmental awareness however for the first time Ocean Crusaders will be represented. Sean Manchester from California, USA will compete in the seventh Leg of the race. This leg consists of two races, a 3300 mile race from San Francisco to the Panama Canal followed by an 1800 mile race from Panama to New York

Sean will not only be carrying our campaign to the communities he visits and raising awareness amongst fellow competitors, he has a goal to raise $1 for every mile he races to Assist Ocean Crusaders in educating people of the issues the oceans are facing.

To find out more about Sean and to donate to his campaign visit Manchester Ocean Racing website.

To follow the race visit the event website.

Stay tuned for a major announcement in early April regarding further involvement in the Clipper Race by Ocean Crusaders.

Ocean Crusaders is an environmental campaign founded by Australian Solo sailor Ian Thomson. Aimed at educating the world about the ocean, the creatures in it and the hazards they face, it is a dream of Ocean Crusaders that everyone changes their habits to ensure a plastic free ocean for tomorrow.

Their online educational program is free to download from the site and has versions for the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Belize.
