Monsoon Cup - Missed moment for Team Gilmour

by Team Gilmour on 5 Dec 2013
Monsoon Cup OnEdition / WMRT http://wmrt.com/
This update has been a long time coming and it has been good for us as a team to reflect on how the Monsoon Cup went for us. Following the first day with Pete filling in for David, while the races were kept close and there were moments of brilliance, we ended with a score of zero wins and three losses.

The following day David was back and had seemed to overcome most of his sickness and the team sailed well to win two races against Hansen and Koo and were unlucky to lose the third against Richard.

We went into the next day full of confidence with the final six races to complete and at least four wins required to guarantee a spot in the quarterfinals. Throughout the day there were glimmers of greatness but eventually we ended up with zero wins and five losses as a mixture of penalties, poor starts and the inability of converting our leads to race wins plagued our day with the final race of the round robin to be raced the following day.

Although the team still approached the final day with the same enthusiasm we had entered the regatta with we weren't able to win our final race and we ended the round robin on a two wins, nine losses scoreline and 11th overall.

Our weaknesses throughout the regatta were really magnified against the world’s top teams and really showed us that you have to be on top of your game.

It was very unfortunate that Dave fell ill on the first day of competition, as we felt that our preparation leading up to the event had been good. But with our regular crew arrangements, processes and routines upturned on the first day it was hard to generate momentum throughout the event.

We still learnt a huge amount and look forward to our next event and growing together as a team.
