McDougall + McConaghy Moth Worlds- Big breeze for Day 2 - Predictwind

by Richard Gladwell on 11 Jan 2015

The 165 strong fleet at the McDougall + McConaghy Moth Worlds can expect a much fresher breeze on Port Phillip for the second day of racing.

The latest weather data, analysed by Predictwind shows a building SE breeze which will be averaging 15kts and gusting to over 25kts during the racing - due to start at 1300hrs local time, with three races scheduled.

The direction of the wind stays stable during the afternoon, but builds as stronger winds from the ocean move over the low peninsular which separates Port Phillip from the ocean.

In the diagrams below, taken at the most detailed level available we can see the fresher wind building offshore nad diverted a little by the cliffs of the southern Victorian coastline, before the strength becomes too intense and it flows over the top of the land and into Port Phillip bay.

Conditions should be challenging for the Moth sailors, with the fresh winds and flat seas, as the area is protected from the ocean seas, and also from the big chop which is normally associated from this wind condition at the northern, or Melbourne city end of Port Phillip bay.

Similar winds are predicted for Monday and to increase on Tuesday.
