Tom Squires is the latest member of the British Sailing Team to be awarded the Marlow Ropes Award following a successful summer which saw him finish fourth in the men’s RS:X windsurfing event at the Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland before taking an eighth place at the RS:X European Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

The Marlow Ropes Award was introduced in 2002 with the aim of rewarding Britain’s most promising young sailors for their determination, focus and talent. Squires, who has gone from strength to strength since taking his debut senior victory at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia in Palma in April, and receives £2500 to spend at Marlow Ropes over the next year.

The 23-year-old visited the Marlow Ropes stand at the Southampton Boat Show to accept his award: “Thank you very much to Marlow Ropes for this award. It feels great to be nominated and to join the illustrious list of sailors from our programme who have been recipients of the award over the years. I am super happy that Marlow are supporting me.”

Squires has just returned from an event at the Tokyo 2020 venue but said that he is looking forward to making the most of his award now he is back in the UK: “This award will help me be more professional in my programme. I’ll be using fresh ropes, setting up new equipment and hopefully it’s all going to be world class.”

Milly Stone from Marlow Ropes said: “The Marlow Ropes Award was designed to try and help the up and coming sailors of the British Sailing Team progress into the Podium Squad and give them all of the equipment they need in order to progress their career.

“The Award this time around will allow Tom to experiment with different types of ropes to ensure he finds the right rope to suit his style of sailing.

“In all the years that we have run the Marlow Ropes Award we have always received feedback from the sailors and worked with them extensively on new products for each Olympic cycle. We find that working with the team is vital as the feedback we receive is influential in developing and improving our products at Marlow.”

As well as supporting up-and-coming sailors, Marlow Ropes are also the official supplier to the British Sailing Team thanks to its industry-renowned reputation for producing products tried, tested and trusted in the world’s harshest environments.
