The Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race start saw the fleet of 56 yachts slowly move out of Sydney Harbour under blue skies and a light north westerly breeze that dropped out totally as the boats reached the Heads.
The fleet came to a complete standstill as many of the yachts drifted around under South Head lighthouse.
The next instalment in the battle between Wild Oats XI and Perpetual Loyal for Sydney Hobart line honours saw the light wind specialist Wild Oats XI beat the fleet down the harbour and out of the Heads, from where it headed straight out to sea, followed by Perpetual Loyal. The majority of the fleet navigated up the Northern Beaches just off shore.
Both Wild Oats XI and Perpetual Loyal have had alternations made in the lead-up to this race. Perpetual Loyal, with her lighter keel bulb still suffered from her generous beam in such conditions.
Dale Lorimer was on the harbour and captured the ‘action’.
