Innovative thinking leads to new Tandem Anchor product

by Des Ryan on 17 Nov 2012
Tandem Anchor system in action SW
If you are in love with the idea of putting out two anchors when the going gets tough, you may like the idea of a new idea in anchoring which was nominated for a DAME design award in 2012. It's the tandem anchor system - two anchors, but only one chain and it comes from a brand new company making waves for their innovative designs.

What's the advantage of having only one chain? For a quick getaway, there's only one chain to retrieve, and the fewer chains, the fewer possibilities for stuck or tangled anchors. The product is the brainchild of Weber Marine.

So Wemar's Tandem Anchor System is a set of complementing anchors that enable effortless application of tandem anchoring technique. The extra value of the system is that the second anchor is well angled to the sea-floor.

You might say that it's another version of the use of an anchor with an anchor buddy or sentinel, keeping the second anchor's chain pulling at an ideal - ie. close to the sea bed - angle. However, using an anchor buddy required two actions to get the system in place, and again, two actions to make a getaway.

But what about deck space? At least you can put the anchor buddy away, whereas two anchors on deck...

Amazingly, the system occupies the same space on deck as a single anchor. So the result is to enable incredibly high holding power, significantly increasing safety at anchor, dramatically increasing confidence - and therefore allowing carefree sleep.

It comes in two design variants, in dimensions from 9-55kg, hot dip galvanized or stainless steel. It's early days to get good across-the-board feedback from cruising sailors who have tried it, but the theory seems sound and that's a great start.
