ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne - Strong fields and more to come

News this week that the entire Australian Sailing Team and development squad, with five Olympic Gold Medallists and three silver medallists in their ranks, will be contesting classes at ISAF Sailing World Cup - Melbourne.

The Melbourne event forms the second leg of the global ISAF Sailing World Cup Series and is run in conjunction with the iconic Sail Melbourne regatta, from December 1st to eighth 2013.

Event Director and Olympic Gold Medallist Mark Turnbull commented, 'We are very pleased that the Australian sailing team will be with us in full force.'

Yachting Australia CEO Phil Jones said 'The exciting thing for us is the amount of talent in Southern Hemisphere sailing, we see that in the 49ers, the 49er FX, Lasers, Finns, Nacra 17’s and the 470’s.'

'The 2013 ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne, is the premier Olympic class regatta in the Southern Hemisphere and will be a great showcase and proving ground for that talent.'

It’s a star-studded team that is recording amazing results through the current European regattas.

Mat Belcher, 470 Olympic Gold medallist will be keen to win his 18th regatta in a row, with he and his post London 2012 crew Will Ryan an unbeaten combination.

49er London Olympic Gold Medallists Nathan Outteridge and crew Iain Jensen first up engagement post America’s Cup 2013 will be the 49er Worlds in Marseille, in late September. From there they will head to Melbourne as their first Sailing World Cup event for the next season.

The Australians lining up in Melbourne in the Laser fleet will include Tom Burton, currently ranked number one in the world, Ryan Palk ranked second, Matthew Wearn ranked fourth, Ashley Brunning fifth and Jared West 12th.

Australia has its strongest ever Finn squad, coached by US Finn coach John Bertrand. Brendan Casey is ranked third in world, Victorian home town hero, Oliver Tweddell is eighth and Jake Lilley 12th.

The women’s classes are packed with Olympic stars, 2008 Olympic Gold medallist Elise Rechichi with crew Sarah Cook will be back in 470 W class, while in the 49er FX class Olympic Silver Medal Match Racing skipper Olivia Price and crew Caitlin Elks will be battling against Haylee Outteridge, sister of Nathan and Nina Curtis -Olympic Women’s Match Racing Silver Medallist and Tessa Parkinson, 2008 Olympic 470 W Gold Medal crew with Chelsea Hall.

With such a strong core fleet, Olympic 2016 aspirants from around the world are expected to seize the chance to race against many of the world’s best.

There are already entries from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, and Russian Federation who have taken advantage of the early entry fees which close off on November 1st.’
