Paul Bayliss won the first race of the second day at the Gul RS700 Nationals being held at Hayling Island SC, then was adjudged OCS in race 4 but retains his overall lead after the discard. Bayliss leads from Tim Johnson who has now racked up three second places and a third place. Third is David Gorringe who won the final race Monday.

Day 2 of the nationals dawned with a strong wind and an ominously big swell in Hayling Bay. As the fleet arrived at the race area , the sea state was every bit as challenging as was predicted with some very large and sharp waves punching through the race area and causing problems for a number of the newcomers to the fleet. The day started with a training seminar by Paul Bayliss on Championship preparation and Speed round the course where he talked us through the previous days races highlighting his thinking during the phases of the race.

Race 3

The first race proved a serious challenge for many of the newcomers to the fleet with the big waves coming in at quite an unusual angle demanded very different techniques on either tack. It was the old hands who dominated the racing with Paul Bayliss taking the win from Tim Johnson with Nick Peters holding onto third from an ‘on form’ Dave Gorringe.

Race 4 - STOP PRESS

Rumour has it that Dave Gorringe, having achieved his best result of the event in crossing the line in second place was heard to shout 'I am brilliant'. This proved to be quite prophetic when the race winner was later found to have been OCS giving Dave a well deserved Nationals race win.

Despite the conditions the fleet was feeling it’s feet and the start line was a very crowded place and the individual recall flag was flying. The fleet split left and right again as opinions on how best to sail the tide differed. Paul Bayliss came in from the left to lead at the windward mark just ahead of Tim Johnson and Pete Purkiss who had gone right.

Downwind Paul dropped it at the first gybe followed by Tim Johnson and Pete Purkiss. Seeing this Dave Gorringe dropped his kite and sailed a very conservative race taking the lead. This allowed Tim Johnson and Mark Pollington to hoist and make some big gains on the leader. Dave Gorringe covered Tim up the right hand side of the beat whilst Paul Bayliss and Jon Heissig charged up the left to join in the fight for the lead.

The last run was very close but Paul Bayliss crossed the line first from Dave Gorringe, Tim Johnson and Jon Heissig. It was only later that the fleet discovered that Paul had been OCS giving Dave a well deserved and popular win. Overnight Paul Bayliss retains his championship lead from Tim Johnson but with Dave Gorringe moving up to third overall. In the silver fleet Andrew Collenette is leading in 10th place overall from Pete Shaw.
