Gul RS200 National Championships - day 2 |
Roger Gilbert and Jane Willan have taken the lead after day 2 at the Gul RS200 National Championships at Hayling Island SC. Two race wins Monday took Gilbert and Willan seven points clear of second placed Ben Saxton and Kate Macgregor with a clean score of three wins after the first discard. In third place are Geoff Carveth and Lucy Macgreagor and in fourth Tom Nd Jo Hewitson. Day 2 – Gul RS200 National Championships The fleet ventured out of Chichester harbour, accompanied by drizzle and 18-21 knots of SW to start race 3 for the Southern Sailboats Bowl. Pathfinders for the race Dave Steed/Noelle Vidal decided to show the fleet the way up the first beat, declining to take the option to tack onto starboard and carrying on over to Portsmouth before turning left. With the rest of the fleet coming in from the left, it was Ben Saxton/Kate McGregor leading at the first mark, with Steed/Vidal close behind. Robbie Burns/Victoria lee-Simpson made a good effort of getting entangled on the mark, misjudging the tide and taking out a large proportion of the fleet in the process. Most got round though and enjoyed the sleigh ride downwind conditions in the big waves. Gilbert/Willan eventually pulled through the fleet to take the wining gun, with Marshall King/Emma Clarke in 2nd and Geoff Carveth/Lucy McGregor 3rd. Race 4 for the Yachts and Yachting Trophy started in similar conditions, but with a more confused sea state. Ian & Chris Martin, acting as pathfinders, had paid attention in the first race and after banging hard right came into the windward mark first. However, Gilbert/Willan again showed their class by ripping downwind to take lead, followed over the finish line by Tom/.Jo Hewitson and then the Martins. Behind however, the fleet was having fun and games with numerous capsizes in the difficult waves resulting in LDC bringing down nine new masts – apparently a mast shaped like a banana is not fast!! Overall, Gilbert/Willan are winning, with Saxton/McGregor 2nd and Carveth/McGregor 3rd. Top silver fleet is Maria Stanley/Ian Robertson from Oxford SC, with James & Sam Yearsley winning the bronze fleet.
