Governor's Cup – Tough fight on Day 3

LACHY ahead SAM Gilmores - 2016 Governor's Cup Mary Longpre
2016 Governor's Cup - Racing began at noon with lighter winds and warmer weather with temperatures in the high 80’s. As the day went on, there were big swells. There was a warning that life guards were tracking a ten foot Great White Shark in the vicinity of the weather mark. However, it was not seen again throughout the day.

It was a good day for the home team from Balboa Yacht Club. Their total team weight is less than most of the other teams, so the lighter winds were a benefit. They won the last five races, sometimes able to come from behind to pass their opponents. They defeated Del Rey Yacht Club, San Francisco Yacht Club, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and Lachy Gilmour’s Team from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. However they lost the previous day to SDYC, currently in first place with 16 wins. Nevin Snow and his SDYC team have lost only to Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and Sam Gilmour of RFBYC.

The standings after eighteen flights of the Round Robins are as follows: San Diego Yacht Club with 16 wins, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia with 15, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club’s Sam Gilmour with 13 wins, Balboa Yacht Club with 11, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club with 10, Del Rey Yacht Club with 9. Two teams are tied with seven each. They are Lachy Gilmour of RFBYC and the Japan Match Race Association. Portland Yacht Club has 6, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron with 5.75, due to a small penalty with equipment. San Francisco Yacht Club has 5 wins and Will Boulden of RFBYC has 3.

There are four more flights of the second Round Robin. The teams will race those flights Friday starting at noon again. Then the semi-finals and finals will begin. Competition will conclude on Saturday with more of the Semi-Finals and Finals involving the top four teams. The other racers will be able to watch from spectator boats.
