Firefly Open – Royal Lymington Yacht Club
Twentythree Fireflys converged on the Royal Lymington Yacht Club over the weekend of 30/31 August 2008 for the club’s annual Summer Dinghy Open, this year shared with the Lark and Scorpion fleets, and sponsored by Harken UK.

With strong spring tides and light winds a feature throughout the weekend, running decent racing was rather challenging. Fortunately the Lymington race team were up to the task and managed to fit in three excellent races on Saturday in bright sunshine.

Overnight leaders were Paul and Laura Kameen, the newly crowned Firefly National Champions, counting a fourth, first and second. Second were Mark Tait and Sally Wakefield, with a first, third and fifth and third overall were Barney Smith and Alannah Witherby with results of eighth, second and first.

After an excellent evening’s entertainment in the Royal Lymington provided by live band, Bigstuff, the fleet reconvened on Sunday under grey skies with a distinct absence of breeze. Despite a valiant effort by the race team, the wind refused to play and all racing was abandoned at 1pm leaving the results as on Saturday night.

The Firefly class would like to thank all at the Royal Lymington for organising a fantastic weekend, despite the awkward weather. We look forward to returning in 2009.

The next event on the Firefly Open calendar is the M25 Open at Chipstead on Sunday 6th September which will be followed by the legendary ‘cream tea’ event at Upper Thames on the 13th and 14th September.

The class association can also announce that the 2009 National Championship, the 63rd ‘Firefly Week’, will be held at Hamble River Sailing Club from the 15th to 21st August next year.
