F18 World Championship – Dutch win 2009 title ahead of two Brits

by Rob Kothe, Sail-world.com on 18 Jul 2009
Day 5 - 2009 F18 Worlds Pierrick Contin www.pierrickcontin.com
Winds up to 30 knots and two important black flags made for a tumultuous final days racing at the 2009 F18 Worlds.

Dutch sailor Coen de Koning successfully defended his 2008 World Championship crown, winning the title from Britain’s Rob Wilson and Marcus Lynch with second pairing Hugh Styles and Ferdinand West third.

At the start of the days racing Coen De Koning (NED) was just two points ahead of Mischa Heemskerk (NED), who was a point ahead of Billy Besson (FRA).

In the first race of the morning, Mischa Heemskerk and Bastiaan Tentij (NED) won narrowly from Coen de Koning and Thijs Visser (NED) with Jean-Christophe Mourniac and Alexandre Guyader (FRA) in third.

In the second race of the day former F18 World Champion Australia’s Glenn Ashby won from Mitch Booth (NED) with Gunnar Larsen (NED) third ahead of Hugh Styles Hugh (GBR), Rob Wilson (GBR) was sixth, Besson was 15th and Hermskeerk was 24th.

In the final race, the Gold fleet started under a black flag and Heemskerk and Besson were first away.

Besson led at the top mark but with wind into the mid-20’s and building waves he capsized. Through the top gate the second time Heemskerk was still leading De Koning was second but he capsized on the final run.

Heemskerk crossed the line first, but there was no gun. Mitch Booth crossed second and Australian Adam Beattie third. Styles finished next then Wilson. Behind them Coen De Koning finished 18th.

Confusion reigned amongst the sailors. Had Heemskerk won the race or not?

With wind gusts up to 30knots, with seas well over a metre, the Race Committee decided to call it a day. The fleet scooted back to the beach more or less in one piece.

Except one English boat, GBR 7, Adam Piggott and Luke Butler, who capsized and had difficulties getting their boat upright. Even with the rescue boat it was impossible to get them back up. They have to remove the mast in the wild seas and finally they too are back on the beach safe and well.

Ashore Heemskerk’s worst fears are realised. He was black flagged along with Besson, Beattie and a host of other sailors.

Coen de Koning and Thijs Visser have won the 10th F18 World championship, ahead of Rob Wilson and Marcus Lynch, with Hugh Styles and Ferdinand West third.
