Three Clipper Events yachts will be at the start line of one of the most iconic sailing events in the world.
The 68-foot ocean racers - , the second generation of stripped-down ocean racing yachts to take part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht race – will be at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2013. The historic Isle of White regatta has been a highlight of the British sporting calendar since it started in 1826.
Designed by naval architect Ed Dubios, the Clipper 68s made their final circumnavigation in the last edition of the biannual Clipper Race. With more than 140,000 miles under their hulls, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race fleet is designed for fast downwind ocean racing.
Built for speed while not compromising safety, they provide an exciting and hands on experience for novice and experienced sailors alike.
This will be the seventh time the Clipper 68s will challenge their competitors in the Class 2 IRC with a crew from all walks of life who are on the water amongst some of the yachting world’s biggest names and boats.
They include current Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crew members to a team who are using the experience to raise money for charity in memory of a friend who was a keen sailor.
Since its inception by legendary yachtsman and Clipper Ventures Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in 2005, Clipper Events has stood apart from other sailing event providers. It uses its unique fleet of identical ocean racers for iconic sailing events and other on-the-water events which also meet the business and relationship development objectives of corporations in the UK and around the world.
This year, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston will be swapping ocean racers to enjoy the thrill of Cowes Week as Master of the Shieldhall Heritage steamship. Recognised to be the largest working steam ship of her type in Britain, Sir Robin will be using his Class one STCW certificate knowledge to navigate her safely round the Solent.
