A Bristol sailing charity has recently joined a very select group of just eleven UK sites, having been given a Sailability Centre of Excellence award.
The All Aboard! Watersports Centre in Bristol City Docks is a totally inclusive group that offers equal opportunities for everyone, even in its race squad. Representatives from the Centre spoke at this year’s RYA Sailability Conference, explaining how they operate their inclusive pathway into sailing.
The charity also owns a commercial sailing school that runs activities for young people from inner city Bristol and helps to fund the charitable work.
Leon Ward, RYA Disability Development Officer, commented: “All Aboard! will be a valuable addition to our Centres of Excellence and has a fantastic inclusive approach to sailing.”
Sailability Centres of Excellence help new Sailability groups with advice on:
• setting up
• running Sailability schemes with Certificates of Achievement and volunteer logbooks
• developing volunteers
• equipment
• finding funding
To achieve Centre of Excellence status, centres have to fulfil a set of criteria that includes being both an RYA training centre and an authorised Sailability Disability Awareness Training Centre, making use of the RYA Sailability schemes and having a willingness to assist other Sailability groups.
