Audi Melges 20 World Championship - Activities commence at Ocean Reef

Sunday marked the commencement of activities at Ocean Reef Club in high anticipation of the very first ever Audi Melges 20 World Championship, fully supported by Melges USA and Coconut Grove Sailing Club. The day came to a perfect close with teams gathering at the home of George and Patty Lucas for an incredible, yet casual and easy kick-off dinner party.

At high noon, teams assembled in an organized line for launching boats and inspection. Rob Wilber's Cinghiale, Trey Sheehan's Flat Stanley/Hooligan Racing, Skip Shapiro's Makiara and John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti were along those that finally put it on wax in preparation of the start of the Championship.

Registration gets fully underway on Monday with sail measurement commencing in the same location. Boat measurement and inspection continues as teams set-up for more practice time and the rest of the fleet ascends upon Ocean Reef Event website

The wind was relatively light first thing and an initial postponement was made to allow the sea breeze to start to build The 19 strong Brightlingsea One Design fleet once again enjoyed some astonishingly close racing and going into the final day Jeremy Newman's Avocet, crewed by Ollie Newman and Sarah Bines, and Clive Goodwin's Cormorant, crewed by Graham Sanderson and Mark Schofield, are both counting four points with Avocet claiming first place on countback having won race five.

James Badenach's team wins the Gertrude Cup 2017
Whilst the winners received great appreciation from their rivals, there were 3 rowdy cheers for Grieg City Academy YC. A southwesterly gradient breeze built during the day, peaking at 20 knots, with the wind oscillating 20 degrees, producing a shifty race course in the Central Solent.

The Gertrude Cup 2017 – Day 4
The Royal Yacht Squadron Team, skippered by Bruce Huber, is third for the regatta, and sailing well. At midday the fleet was towed out to Hill Head, in anticipation of wind, and soon after arrival in the race area, a fresh breeze rapidly kicked in from the southwest delivering classic Solent sea breeze conditions.

Three races were held in medium to heavy airs for the third day of the Etchells invitational regatta. In a shifty northerly breeze, a significant tide built during the day, and by mid-afternoon the wind speed had piped up to 20 knots.
