2015 Magic Marine RS200 Winter Championship - Overall report

by Chris Catt on 16 Mar 2015
2015 Magic Marine RS200 Winter Championship GWSC Race Team
This weekend saw the season opening Magic Marine RS200 Winter Championships hosted by Grafham Water Sailing Club. 15 brave teams turned up to a chilly but entertaining 10-15knot race course. The format for the weekend was 12 short two lap windward leewards over the two days and was delivered with efficiency and precision by Race Officer and Commodore Peter Saxton and his team.

Saturday was bookended by wins for Ally Martin and Simon Potts representing Burghfield Sailing Club. In the middle Matt Mee and Emma Norris showed their pace to record 3 bullets and take the over-night lead from the ever consistent Nick Charles and Alice Eyre.

After an excellent evening of fine dining, rugby and dog chasing the fleet reappeared on Sunday morning to a carbon copy of Saturday all looking forward to another day of quick fire racing. It did not disappoint with exceptionally close competition throughout the fleet and numerous place changes that meant finishing positions were never assured until the final moments. The day again started and finished for wins by the same team - but this time it was local favourites Tim Saxton and Kate Robinson taking the bullets.

In between the boats directed and marshalled by Emma Norris and Alice Eyre took control with a brace of wins apiece. This meant the Winter Champions for 2015 were Matt and Emma followed by Nick and Alice in second and Ally and birthday boy Simon in third. Joe Adams and Emma Lucas sailed a consistent series to take the Silver fleet spoils, with Alexander Lee and Phoebe Noble winning Bronze.

With no more than five minutes between races and a full 12 race series completed a massive thanks must go to Grafham Water Sailing Club for what everyone agreed was the most efficient and enjoyable weekend’s racing: great format, great race team and an excellent way to start the RS200 circuit for 2015. See you all for more of the same at the Sprint Champs at Rutland Sailing Club on the 11- 12 April.
