2015 AYC East Coast K6 Open meeting overall

by Heather Chipperfield on 19 May 2015 A record 12 boats attended the Aldeburgh Yacht Club Open meeting held over 16 / 17 May, the second K6 regatta of the season after Hayling Island in April and the ‘shake down’ event before Lake Garda at the end of June.

The weather was kind with no rain and a gusty 12-15 knts north westerly on day one followed by a slightly lighter but equally fluky westerly on day two.

The first start on Saturday was at 13.00 hrs with Race Officer Simon Fulford laying the course upstream of the anchorage with the windward mark in the vicinity of the Stanny racing mark giving beats against the ebb and fast downwind legs. Neil Davison and Andrew Yonge in Airshock two made the early running in race one before Lawrence and Luka Crispin were lifted into the top mark on the last lap to secure their first bullet. Two more followed but with Neil Fulcher and James Polson in 222 in contention enabling them to claim three successive second places over the afternoon. 20 degree shifts and a strong tide made for some technical sailing and some good close racing particularly in the middle order.

After a Pimms reception the Club hosted a scenic dinner appreciated by all.

The westerly on day two was more difficult for the Race Officer but there was general relief to return to the Stanny reach rather than racing in the moorings and as it turned out there was perfectly adequate beating to be had as well as contrasting conditions to the previous session due to the strong flood tide changing the dynamic.

Some minor gear problems on launching prevented the whole fleet taking part on day one but there was a full compliment out at 10.30 hrs for the start of Sunday’s racing. 12 boats, good breeze and tide under the starters made for difficult conditions on the line but only race five was recalled and otherwise no OCS’s!

After an enforced lay day (jib halyard!) and the loss of three races, Peter Kirkby and Georgie Smith – sailing together in the absence of their regular crews! - brought real competition to the front and lead race four to the last mark before being reeled in by Messrs Crispin! Team Fulcher followed closely in third – which order was repeated in the fifth race. With the breeze dropping the last race saw Lawrence and Luka post a perfect sixth bullet, Fulcher / Polson in second and Davison / Yonge taking another third which was the same positions as the overall Regatta podium places scored out – quality to the top but commiserations to Peter and Georgie for what could have been……….!!

New owners Simon Sydenham in 211 and Mike Trueman in 172 sailed consistently and took creditable fourth and eighth places respectively.

Lawrence and Luka Crispin retain the title they won last year and were presented The Fenwick Challenge Cup by Tikkii Mawson, Vice Commodore, AYC.
