Two Gates Invitational was held Sunday under sunny skies with temperatures in the high 50s while the top East Coast sailing venues are dealing with snow, ice and highs in the low to mid twenties. Not necessarily considered warm, but balmy weather compared to the rest of the country.

David Bassett-Parkins and his One Design 48, Emirage II, took first-place overall honors in PHRF A in a challenging breeze that never blew over 6 knots. His biggest challenge came from Rob Sjostedt’s Reichel-Pugh 47, Flyer, who---even though they were a slower boat---finished a close second on corrected handicap time over the 13.2-nautical mile course.
Bob Marcus drove his Schock 35, Code Blue ( co-owned with Bruce Bennett) to first place overall in PHRF B with a mere 24 seconds of corrected handicap time separating him from second place finisher Tom Brott and his J/109, Electra.
The PHRF C class was the largest class of the day with Dave Booker’s Schock 34PC, lu lu, correcting out to first place in the class with second place going to Brian Golden’s Santana 30/30GP, Goombah, on corrected time.
Rounding out the classes were the Cal 25s with Tiburon’s co-owners Rick Sottile and Felix Basadre finishing well ahead of second place Charlie Legeman’s Go Big Daddy Go.

Because the breeze was barely blowing 4-5 knots most of the day the Principal Race Officer, Camille Daniels, made the decision to shorten the course for the PHRF C and Cal 25 classes to 8.5-n.m. to ensure that no one would be left out after sunset.
Skippers and crew in both classes were thankful for the decision as it was a cool day and the sun was waning over the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
More than 25 skippers brought their boats and crew out for this traditional race that gets its name from the course they sail. Beginning inside Long Beach Harbor, the boats exit the harbor through the Port of Long Beach entrance known as Queens Gate. They sail outside the breakwater up to Angels Gate, the Port of Los Angeles entrance, and enter Los Angeles Harbor. From, there they sail back down to weave in and out of the breakwater finishing back in Long Beach.
