Owner / Driver Offshore Double - Transatlantic Race 2015 Rachel Jaspersen
Transatlantic Race 2015 – Lloyd Thornburg is going for a rare “Owner/Driver Offshore Double” by racing in the Transatlantic Race and the Transpac in the same month.
Lloyd Thornburg, Brian Thompson and the crew of the MOD 70 Phaedo3 have been breaking sailing speed records since this wickedly fast, chrome and green trimaran debuted in Lorient this winter. But they’re just getting started.
Tomorrow they’ll be competing for class honours against some of the fastest race-boats in the world including the 100-foot long monohull Comanche, 88-footer Rambler 88, and the 63-foot trimaran Paradox in the Transatlantic Race that starts in Newport, Rhode Island. And if the weather cooperates, and they can push the boat to its full potential (and get a bit of luck), they hope to reel off average speeds approaching 30-knots, and maybe even bag the race record.
And as soon as they land in Cowes, UK, (hopefully in around seven days) Thornburg will be racing to do what most owner/drivers never do—skipper their own boats in the Transatlantic Race and the Transpac in the same month. He and the crew of his orange Gunboat 66 Phaedo will be going for it at the Transpac start in Los Angeles, California, bound for Hawaii on July 18th.
As you can see in the following video, the sheer power and speed of Phaedo3 make Thornburg’s ambitious July plans possible.
- Two Races
- Two Records
- Two Oceans
- Two Phaedos
- One Month
