The Chinese Win in China
Congratulations to Dongfeng Race Team on an almost wire-to-wire victory in Leg 3. A really impressive, some might say flawless performance made them the first Chinese boat to win a leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. They did it by an impressive margin, sailing into their home port to grab the overall lead.
We left the fleet a week ago poised dramatically on opposite sides of the Malacca Strait in two completely different winds. Pic 1 from 12:40 on the 20th January (all times are UTC) showed the leaders with four knots from the east-southeast. While the pack had three knots from the north-east. They were all reaching towards the entrance to the traffic separation zone (red and white ball just in front of Dongfeng) but on opposite tacks.
