With entries flowing in, Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) is looking forward to a revitalised format for the 2012 Sydney Harbour Regatta.

To be held across two days on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 March 2012, the Sydney Harbour Regatta is Sydney’s premier yacht racing event with over 300 yachts and 2,500 crew members competing inshore and offshore, on as many as ten course areas and up to twenty-five divisions with the majority of classes racing on both days.

The new look, concise event format will include live entertainment and the traditional post race beach party back at MHYC each night – featuring Atomic on Saturday evening and sailing favourite, the Wolverines, plus prize presentation on Sunday night.

Commodore of MHYC, Julie Hodder, commented: 'We’re excited about our action packed weekend event this year. We feel having racing for all classes across two days followed immediately by Sunday’s prize presentation and live performance from the Wolverines will create a great atmosphere post race back at the Club.'

'We very much look forward to welcoming all competitors, their family and friends to MHYC on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons to enjoy a beach BBQ and great entertainment,' she said.

The Sydney Harbour Regatta is open to all Australian and International yachts, from IRC and PHS racing and cruising classes to the very popular international classes. A large PHS fleet is again anticipated with spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions to attract all those interested in getting out and competing.

Racing is conducted on the waters of Sydney Harbour and offshore for the IRC grand prix yachts.

The regatta is a regular feature on the race calendars of some of Australia’s most renowned yachts and their crews.

Awesome action anticipated - Sydney Harbour Regatta

Peter Sorensen, a MHYC Member, will again be the one to beat in IRC Division C with his yacht The Philosophers Club coming back to contend their title after a successful year in 2011 with wins across numerous events.

And as always, all eyes will be on Marcus Blackmore’s Hooligan, winner of IRC Division A at the 2011 Sydney Harbour Regatta – his Tp52 appears almost unbeatable, so securing a win against Blackmore and his crew would earn regular rivals including Loki and Shogun much kudos.

Another expected showdown, which will make for exciting action on the water, will be between MHYC DK46s Exile and Nine Dragons following their recent stoush in the Pittwater to Coffs race where they came away with a 1-2 finish in the IRC Division.

This year’s event will feature a strong contingent of One Design Classes as well as the visual allure of the old school classics including the historic 18 foot skiffs and gaff rigged classics. MHYC has also extended an invite to various Production Classes to expand on the popularity of individualised divisions created for Classes such as X-Yachts who are back again this year with another healthy field. Within the Sports Boat Division the Elliott 7’s are poised to also have a strong contingent.

The event forms the National Championship for the Flying Tiger 10m Class, the NSW State Championships for the Cavalier 28 Class and the International Yngling Class and also forms part of the Summer Pointscore Series for the International Etchells and International Dragon Classes. The Adams 10m Class, who are always a presence at this regatta, held their National Championships at MHYC in late January providing a form guide for those to watch in this Class – Mitch Millers Rock Solid, second place in 2011, is an early entrant for the 2012 Sydney Harbour Regatta set to see if he’s able to better this.

The iconic Sydney event, which was conceived by MHYC and is run with the valuable assistance of a network of Sydney Yacht Clubs - CYCA, MHYC, MYC, RANSA, RPAYC, RPEYC, RSYS, SASC and SFS, without whom the event would not be possible.

The event provides an amazing spectacle with unlimited on-water action along with numerous onshore social and lifestyle activities all taking part around the enviable waterfront location of MHYC on the Spit at Mosman.
