Stena Match Cup Sweden - Volvo Spring Cup preview

Marstrand - Stena Match Cup Sweden Dan Ljungsvik
Volvo Spring Cup, sailed this weekend in Gothenburg, serves as a qualifying event to Stena Match Cup Sweden 2015 and two teams will win entry to the Tour event at Marstrand in July. The regatta has attracted a strong line-up and the stakes are high for a number of home teams from the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club.

The best Swedish team and the best international team in the Volvo Spring Cup will win entry tickets to compete at Marstrand. Among the skippers that will enter the event is Team Anna Östling, reining female World Champion of match racing, and Caroline Sylvan, currently ranked as the sixth best female skipper in the world. Both teams entered Stena Match Cup Sweden when the event last had a Women’s Class in 2013.

“We have a shot at grabbing a spot in the line-up at Marstrand and we are really looking forward to racing this weekend. We have missed competing at Marstrand and now we hope to get a chance to challenge the guys in the Open Class”, says Anna Östling.

Volvo Spring Cup will be decided in a full round robin, where the best teams advance to semi-finals and the final on Sunday afternoon. And there is a lot at stake in this Grade three Event, as it can also award points for sailors on the scoreboard for the World Match Racing Tour. Among the international teams in the regatta are Rasmus Viltoft (DEN) and Martin Mehus (NOR). They will face tough competition from six home teams from the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club (GKSS).

“We have a great line-up and it’s nice to see so many teams from GKSS entering the event, giving it an exciting local derby touch. It is going to be a really tight regatta and all teams have the potential to win”, says David Granath, Project manager of Stena Match Cup Sweden at the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club.

Volvo Spring Cup is organized by the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club in Långedrag between May 9th-10th.

Stena Match Cup Sweden 2014 attracted over 118 000 visitors to Marstrand and the crowds followed Björn Hansen and his team on their way to win their third consecutive title in the regatta. The event is organized by Brandspot together with the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club and this year's edition of the event will take place June 29th – July 4th.
