The Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards held at Government House in Wellington on Saturday evening were a true celebration of leadership.

The ceremony, hosted by Their Excellencies, Honourable Anand Satyanand, Governor General of New Zealand and Mrs Susan Satyanand, was attended by Pippa, Lady Blake, her daughter Sarah Jane and other dignitaries.

Professor Paul Callaghan became our third recipient of The Blake Medal for outstanding leadership contributions to New Zealand. Paul is New Zealands preeminent and most highly respected scientist, both within the scientific community and among the wider population. He is a world leader in the fields of nanotechnology and magnetic resonance and has shown outstanding leadership over 30 years as a scientist, a teacher, a science administrator and communicator.

Professor Callaghan has played a significant role in leading the establishment of New Zealands performance-based research funding system for tertiary institutions. He has also led the development of science communication to the wider public and has taken it as an almost personal crusade to de-mystify science and convey the relevance and excitement of science for all of society.

The Sir Peter Blake Emerging Leader Awards honour six younger leaders showing significant potential. 2007 recipients are: Waikato Primary Health Organisation chief executive, Shelly Campbell; The Halogen Foundation General Manager, Annette Fale; Commander of the HMNZS TE KAHA, Andrew Grant; Outward Bound School Director, Steven Hall; Palmerston North Boys High School Rector, Tim OConnor and chief executive of New Zealand Cricket, Dr Justin Vaughan.

We are also happy to announce the addition of two new Supporting Partners for the Trust. KPMG who will be providing us with accounting services and Tourism Auckland who are assisting us (along with Line 7) in the provision of our new office facility at the Viaduct Harbour. Thanks and welcome to them.

Finally, Dr Mark Orams, Executive Director of the Trust has now stepped back to contribute as a Trustee. Mark's knowledge and expertise of marine science and the environment, as well as being a personal friend of Sir Peter's, has been an incredible asset and the Trust thanks him for his commitment and enthusiasm. His ability to speak and inspire people about Sir Peter, his love of the sea and how we can all contribute has encouraged and motivated many. The Trust is delighted he is staying a part of team and that, as Executive Director, he created such a strong foundation for its future.

Warmest regards

Vicki Watson and Laura Fayerman at the Sir Peter Blake Trust
