Saugmann / Ramsbaek win race 6 at 505 World

by Jordan Spencer/SW UK on 1 Feb 2007
2007 SAP 505 World Championship, Day 4 Sail-World.com /AUS http://www.sail-world.com

Jan Saugmann and Morten Ramsbaek of Denmark nailed race six of the SAP 505 World Championship being sailed in Australia and now have a firm grip on the world title.

In second place overall Mike Martin and Jeff Nelso of the USA could only finish in eleventh and the gap has now opened to 11 points off the Danes. Harry Hamlin and Fritz Lanzinger of the USA jump up into third place overall after finishing second today.

Third on the water in race six went to the lowly placed (28th) German pair, Boris Herrman and Julian Kliener, who have suddenly found some speed, they finished fifth in race five, by far their best results for the week so far.

Another German pair, Jens Findel and Johannes Tellen took fourth and climb seven places to be seventh overall, one behind the best placed British team, Ian Pinnell and Steve Hunt in sixth overall after a seventh place finish today.

Continuing the German theme, their was another good performance today for the ladies; Helen Fischer and Angela Strenger of Germany finished fifth and after an 8th in race five they move up six places to 32nd overall in the 92 boat fleet.

The fourth day of the 2007 World Championship being sailed out of Brighton and Seacliff YC, in Adelaide, South Australia. Race 6 and the forecast was to be a 15-20kn sea breeze.

The morning dawned with a strong ‘gully wind’, a 15kn Sou’ Easter and a lot of cloud. Normally it will bend to the South West and turn into a sea breeze. The cloud was a warning sign, but when it swung to the nor’ East, we knew we were in trouble.

You never get a good sea breeze after a Northerly. Before the race start, it had bent back to the South easter by the time we started; we were heading into a North Wester. There was going to be trouble ahead.

Pressure wise, it was light, 5-8 knots occasionally hitting 10 knots. And there were, as you would expect a lot of shifts. There were some massive positional movements throughout the field, with the field being both compressed several times during the race and then spread on the last beat.

The winner was again Saugmann and Ramsbaek from Denmark, but they had to work hard to do it, digging themselves out from 14th at the first mark. Hamlin and Lanzinger pulled second after being ninth at the first mark.

Beyond that there were some huge horror stories. There were plenty of shifts during the race, with the race committee moving the top mark at every bottom mark rounding.

But it was the last beat that was the doozy. The wind had weakened and had bent a little to the left, but there was slightly more pressure to the right and direction was WSW. However as the leaders approached the finish, the wind died and a south easter formed on the shore.

The first two boats crept over the line, and then we had boats coming from the right in a Westerly and boats running from the left with their kites up. In the end the Sou’ Easter kicked in, but a lot of damage was done.

Tomorrow, there are two races and the forecast is again for a 15-20kn sea breeze. We can only hope.
