Two Volvo Ocean Race venues have been announced in the past few days. Both announcements covered the next two editions of the Round the World race.
Late Friday night (NZT) race organisers announced the the Swedish port of Gothenburg would be the venue for the race finish. The port has hosted three previous Volvo Ocean races including two finishes.
On Tuesday, Auckland was announced as a stopover, also for the next two editions, on the back of substantial funding from the NZ Government and Auckland City Council's events funding arms.
In this edition we carry reports and images from the Auckland announcement, along with a video interview with Knut Frostad on the story so far with the Volvo Ocean Race, and where it is headed.

We also carry the official NZ Government and Auckland Council statements in full. Not because they are a brilliant piece of writing, but there is a lot of statistical information within them, relating to size and economic contribution of the New Zealand marine industry, along with the economic benefit expected from the 15 day stopover. They are impressive numbers.
On Saturday, the Oceanbridge Sail Auckland Regatta gets underway off Royal Akarana YC. There are a few points of interest in the event being both the skiff classes. This will be the first regatta for the new Olympic Womens Skiff, the 49erFX. There is a good fleet for the Mens 49er, too.

In the 470 classes, Paul Snow-Hansen, the 2012 Olympic rep will be racing with a new crew, Daniel Willcox. There is only one entry in the Womens 470 - the 2012 Olympic Gold Medalists - and they will be racing with the Men.

Boat 1 repair and Boat 2 building / SFO Jan Testing Session / ORACLE TEAM USA / San Francisco (USA) / 21-01-2013
America's Cup action picks up next week, with the launching of Emirates Team NZ's second AC72 on Monday. Oracle Team USA is expected to follow suit on the same day local time in San Francisco, but not for their second AC72, but their rebuilt/repaired AC72 which capsized back in October 2012.
Sail-World will be on site for the Emirates Team NZ launch and will cover the Oracle Team USA event as best we are able. In this edition we carry an image gallery from inside the building facility at Oracle Team USA, showing the reconstruction of Boat #1 and the building of Boat #2.
GAC Pindar EX40 - Extreme Sailing Series 2013
The other New Zealand point of interest came today with the announcement from UK that the New Zealand Match racing team, Full Metal Jacket, had been signed as the crew for GAC Pindar to race on the eight event Extreme Sailing Series. Will Tiller and his crew will take over from Ian Williams (GBR), who has chosen to concentrate exclusively on Match Racing this year.
Regardless of the reason why, this is a big opportunity and challenge for the young New Zealand crew as they step nearer to the centre of the professional sailing stage, and the spotlight will be on them, in the eight event circuit.

Of course, this is yet another success for the Lion Foundation RNZYS Youth Program - which seems to have become a veritable production line for the professional sailing circuit. What is the count now? One World Champion Match Racing crew (BlackMatch), an America's Cup World Series crew (Team China) with Waka Racing, and now an Extreme 40 crew in Full Metal Jacket. Plus of course the hundreds of sailors who have been through the program and have joined other professional crews in their ones and twos.
