Emirates Team New Zealand’s first AC72 is lifted out for the last time after finishing its thirty days of sailing.
Our apologies for the delay in getting this newsletter out due to a combination of Internet unavailability in New Zealand, gremlins in Sail-World, and getting some great content.
The New Zealand Womens 49erFX crew of Alex Maloney and Molly Meech have continued their winning ways in the Sail Sydney regatta, currently in its second day, the Olympic skiff crew have won all six races sailed against a nine crew field, and have taken a commanding lead in the event.
The regatta has attracted a big fleet, in Olympic and international classes.

The America's Cuppassed a significant milestone, albeit with a strange twist on Wednesday as Emirates Team New Zealand finished their allowed 30 days of sailing prior to the January 31, 2013 cut-off.
Emirates Team NZ’s AC72 heads for home, leaving Luna Rossa to sail another beat alone, on the NZ teams final day of sailing on Wednesday.
In an America's Cup touted as being one of cost-reduction, it seems odd that we have entered the era of the throw away boat, with the decommissioning of Emirates Team NZ's AC72 after just 30 days sailing. She will not be sailed again, and will probably go down in history as the fastest boat never to have raced.
Already parts are being stripped form her and will be re-used on the team's second boat scheduled for launch in February.
In this edition of Sail-World, we feature video interviews with Grant Dalton and Technical Director Nick Holroyd on the state of the Challenge, with Holroyd covering technical issues and progress. Dalton focuses on the bigger picture and describes their hair-raising run back from Tiri last Thursday week in an NE breeze which hit 30kts and big sea and ebbing tide.

The AC72 buried both bows on occasions, going into the main beam - but was able to drive out on her foils on each occasion.
The team are now confident of their ability to sail in the conditions prescribed in the Protocol for the 34th America's Cup.

The Auckland Anniversary Regatta is expected to attract around 500 boats at the end of January. Two classes, the Starling and Optimists, will be using the regatta as part of their Auckland Championships. Zoe Hawkins outlines the main features of the regatta in this edition.
Top yachting photographer, Will Calver, is a common sight on Auckland harbour, and at other major sailing locations. He will be on the water for the 2013 Auckland Anniversary Regatta. Zoe Hawkins profiles him in this edition.

In San Francisco Artemis Racing has sailed for the eighth day. Courtesy of our friends at www.pressure-drop.us we are able to reproduce a gallery of images showing the red AC72 sailing at speed in winds reported to be blowing up to 20kts. No, she doesn't seem to have foiled yet. No comment from the team on this, and increasingly the view is that she has not been designed to fully foil (at least using the current set of dagger boards).
Actually, there is no certainty that foiling is the silver bullet of the 34th America's Cup. Whether a team need that option as part of their boat speed and tactical arsenal will only be determined in September 2013.
