Sail Mooloolaba 2013 - Inter-state schools target Match Race challenge

Sail Mooloolaba Schools Invitational Match Racing Challenge 2013. School sailors as far south as Canberra set their sight at this year’s competition to be held on the 27th and 28th June 2013.

Even though Canberra Grammar School’s Master in charge of Sailing, Graham Maltby, is a keen supporter of Team Racing, he sees Match Racing as an excellent competition platform for his more experienced sailing team members. 'I have three really good sailors and the match racing event is a really nice fit for those boys. My intention is to send a team if we can get it together,' Maltby said.

Eight schools will be invited to compete this year. Of those entries, two will come from the Sunshine Coast, another two from other Queensland regions while the remaining four places will be open to schools outside of Queensland.

From southern Queensland, The Southport School are another likely entry. Master in charge of Sailing at TSS, Brady Lowe, said there is a strong possibility they will be able to put a team together. 'A lot of our guys will do the Sail Mooloolaba dinghy regatta which is on the weekend after the Match Racing. It’s a good piggy-back onto that event.

'We are interested in all facets of school sailing. Whatever way we can get our boys in boats, is a good way to get them out on the water.'

Only a few of the TSS students have done Match Racing, but not at a competitive level, so Lowe expects there will some scheduled training time arranged prior his school competing at Sail Mooloolaba.

On the Sunshine Coast the competition for the two coveted local invitations will be between Matthew Flinders Anglican College, Sunshine Coast Grammar School and St Andrews Anglican College.

Farther north, Proserpine State High School sailing co-ordinator Jeremy Cooper, hopes to have an amalgamated team for the invitational Match Racing challenge. 'My son Klaus will be at sail Mooloolaba sailing a 420 probably with local sailor James Hodgson. His sister Eva will sail an Optimist. There may be more kids from Airlie Beach there sailing Optimists, but it depends on whether their parents can get time off Sail Mooloolaba website
