SAP 505 World’s set for Adelaide

The final pre-event for the 2007 SAP International 505 World Championships, the Australian titles, start next Tuesday in Adelaide with the World Championship series starting on January 27th and finishing on the 2nd February 2007.

This will the third time that the 505 Worlds has returned to the sheltered waters of the St. Vincent Gulf at the Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club in Adelaide.

Sir James Hardy, now one of Australia’s sailing icons, won the World titles here in 1966 and the Worlds returned in 1983. In Adelaide for the series, he commented, 'I am looking forward to a great regatta.

‘We have 13 countries from around the world, with 19 crews from the USA, 10 crews from Germany including Hasso Plattner, whose software company SAP is sponsoring the regatta. We have eight UK crews and boats from Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, France, Italy, Poland, South Africa and Zimbabwe.’

Amongst the strong US contingent is Howie Hamlin who was second at the 2006 Hayling Island Worlds and he is looking to go one better in Australia.

Hamlin claims the 505 is the best all around two person boat in the world. ‘The 505's light weight, narrow water line, flared topsides, trapeze, large sail area, long spinnaker pole, and comfortable seat tanks, make the boat extremely fast, fun, exciting and pleasurable to sail.'

The development of the Class began at the IYRU trials in 1953, to find the 'best possible two-man centre boarder'. An 18 footer 'Coronet' showed clearly superior to her competitors.

The designer of 'Coronet', John Westell in response to French requests reduced the overall length to 5.05 metres, lightening the hull and modifying it considerably, together with cutting the sail area to 14 sq. metres. And in January 1954 the Five-O-Five was born! The Class expanded rapidly and now at least 18 countries have active fleets. By January 2007 more than 8,925 boats had been registered.

With the crew on the wire and the helmsman hiking, boat stability is good and the boats are easily manouvered. Although any material and type of construction may be used, current boats are now using carbon fibre and epoxy resins. The hull shape is strictly controlled, with minimum weights both for the bare hull and the complete boat in sailing trim.

With 41 Australian crews racing, the host nation should have a good chance of securing the Championship, but its a blue blood field with Olympians and America's cup sailors amongst the favourites. The US, UK and German crews are very strong.

Denny Colliver from the Regatta Office reports, 'This morning the Australian Customs service are inspecting six containers just near the Club and this afternoon unpacking will commence and the international fleet will be on the water tomorrow. We have some gentle soaking rain this morning, but we are looking forward to great weather next week.'
