Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2006 Results

by www.asianyachting.com on 17 Feb 2006
Despite the light prevailing winds throughout the week the scheduled race program was successfully completed. The racing turned into a battle of wits and generally the leaders in each class managed to finish before the wind faded to hold onto their advantage. Full results are listed.

Racing Class
Although Ray Roberts Ulumulu - Quantum Racing Team had technically won the class with a day to spare they went out full of confidence to cap of a good four days racing.

The Royal Malaysian Navy's Zuhrah skippered by Malik Sulaiman have been steadily improving their crew work and boat speed throughout the series to achieve the inevitable and win the final race on handicap. High fives all around. Thomas Blixt's V60 Ericsson took line honours although there boat is better suited to heavier winds and had to settle on third place on the day and overall on the podium.

Ray and his team are off to sunny Spain courtesy of BMW. The combination of Troy Yaw's Ulumulu team from Sarawak with Ray Roberts successful Aussie Quantum Racing Team not only produced the goods but has helped some Malaysian sailors to experience what top flight racing is all about in their own country.

Premier Cruising
David Lindahl's Swan 40 La Samudra won every race in a two horse battle. Although Keith Garry's Beaux Esprits came in second there were times when not much separated the two despite the placing's ending up the same each race.

Sportsboat
Despite Mohd Masyuri Rahmat's KDP II finishing with a second place today, the Royal Malaysian Navy entrant had done enough in earlier races to secure overall victory by two points. Matthew Rickard's Sail in Asia UK Team finished first today to take a well earned second spot overall on the podium. After a slow start Japan's Kenichi Takahashi on Motomet placed third which broke the earlier tie and had to settle on third place overall.

IRC
Kevin Gillow's Minx helmed by his daughter Mia completed a five race rout of the opposition to finish up with a clean sheet. Stuart Crow's Cinders earlier string of second places earns him second place on the podium despite a fourth place today. The Selangor Youth Team on Gapurna Mas Ayu II have consistently scored third to take third overall and have learned allot from this experience to take back home and pass onto other intending sailors.

Multihull
Roger Kingdon's spectacular performance on Moto Inzi continues by taking out both the Performance Handicap Class and the Ocean Multihull Rating system.

Henry Kaye's trimaran The Sting came to the fore today by earning a first place in performance and second in OMR to lift him into third place overall. Kazuo Kobayashi's chartered Chameleon may have finished up third today but has scored consistently to take second overall under both handicap systems and came within a bulls roar of beating Moto Inzi overall but lost out in a count back to break a tie. Larry Pollock's Running Cloud has been in and around the top places all week to finish up with third place in the OMR class.

Club Cruising
Grenville Fordham's second line and handicap win on Image Asia Jemini Jo has sealed victory for them and will take home to Phuket the Commodore's Challenge Cup. Philip Giles on Nom de Plume was never far behind to miss out by one point and take second place overall. After a good start E A Y Heuvel's big Swan 58 Bolero suffered in the lighter conditions to end in third on the podium.

Ocean Rover
