Entries for the Route 66 Yacht Race, held in early March, are now being accepted.
Jointly hosted by Richmond and Onerahi Yacht Clubs, the race is scheduled to start on Friday 4th March 2011 at 3pm off Westhaven and a record fleet is expected for the fifth year this race has been run.
Entrants can expect a variety of good prizes due to the appreciated sponsorship by major sponsors Lombardini Marine, Marsden Cove Marina and Coolstore Construction Ltd with a number of key industry sponsors ensuring all boats will receive a goodies bag on arrival.
Paul Powney of TransDiesel Ltd, distributors for Lombardini Marine, re-iterates that this race is pitched at the middle of the road racer contemplating longer races in the future.
'The race is only 66 nautical miles long and thanks to Marsden Coves’s free berthage at the marina, every boat is accommodated safely and at the same location to share in the prize giving and after match debrief' Last years event had a record turnout and we hope to build on this again. Feedback from participants has been very complimentary to the organisation and everyone enjoyed the party like atmosphere as the boats arrived'
The current record for the race is held by Scott Keon's 'FREE RADICAL' at a time of 7 hours 22 Minutes we are looking for this to be beat.
All finishers will be greeted by a pilot boat to guide them to their berths and to ensure nobody misses out on the sponsors pack'
Other members of the Marine industry have contributed some substantial spot prizes to ensure that not only race winners are catered for with good prizes.
Safety requirements have been set by Yachting New Zealand as Category 4 with the addition of a 406 Epirb and the carrying of either a liferaft or dinghy.
Entries can be made through either Richmond or Onerahi Yacht Clubs.
