The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia announced today that for the first time in the history of the race, the Notice of Race for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is available on the official website in Mandarin as well as English.

Last year, for the first time, Mainland China was represented by not just one, but two entries in the 628 nautical mile race, and it appears they were just the tip of the iceberg, with others showing interest in competing this year.

Enter Ya-wen Huang, otherwise known as Vicky, from Taipei, who has translated the Rolex Sydney Hobart Notice of Race into Mandarin with assistance from others.

“I know the Rolex Sydney Hobart is the most important event in the world of sailing, so I asked Karen if there’s some way I can help. She assigned this challenging but meaningful task. It took nine days to finish the preliminary translation, one day for my friend Wei-Yan to retouch it, and three for Captain Liu and Mr. Kuo to check the technical terms,” Vicky said.

“And thanks to Dr Peng, I was able to get help from the best sailors in Taiwan. It was really a great honour for us to translate the NoR into Mandarin. For me, this experience also helps me prepare for the volunteer work in December. I knew little about sailing before, but now I know at least about entry and requirements of the race.

“Thanks a million to Karen and the CYCA for giving me the chance to learn more about this sport,” Vicky ended.

CYCA CEO, Karen Grega said the translation became possible following her recent trip to Taipei where she once again lectured at an International Sports Forum on invitation by the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee.

“One of the case studies in my talk on fan engagement enhancing major events was the 2015 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. While there, I was introduced to representatives of their National Sailing Association and local clubs, who are very keen to develop sailing in Taipei and introduce regattas between China and Taipei,” Karen Grega commented.

“Vicky was allocated by the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee to look after me and translate. She mentioned she was coming to Australia for a working holiday, and from there, the idea of her volunteering with us leading up to the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart emerged. I then approached her about translating the Notice of Race.

“Vicky is a bright young lady who will be of great assistance this year in the Sydney Race Village. She is IT savvy, good at event management and speaks very good English,” the CEO ended.

Vicky’s extensive resume includes: Administrative Assistant of the Physical Education R&D at National Taiwan Normal University; implementing sport-for-all policy programs for the Sports Administration; drafted Taiwan’s sport-for-all policy for 2016-2021, conducted international conferences, workshops, and public hearings on sport-for-all policy. She also translated documents in her role as Assistant to the Chinese Taipei Archery Association.

Come December, Vicky says, “I am very much looking forward to my first trip to Australia and volunteering in the Race Village. I just want to help people promote sport and learn more.”

John Cameron, the CYCA Commodore, said: “We thank Vicky and her associates for taking on this important role. The Mandarin translation of the Notice of Race will be extremely helpful to anyone from China who is looking to enter our race.”

The Mandarin translation of the Notice of Race is only for reference only. Should there be inconsistencies or conflict between English and Mandarin version, the English version shall prevail.

The start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will be broadcast live on the Seven Network throughout Australia.
The Notice of Race in English and Mandarin are available online.
