Restless- 93 record broken
by Muriel Strahm on 1 May 2001
While gale force winds along the Qld coast gave race organisers reason to consider postponing the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone race, they provided record breaking conditions.
All three local entries were home earlier than ever before with Restless shaving 55 minutes off their 93 record. The fact that the maxi Bobsled added three hours to their 93 time is an indication that the PCSC yachts pushed both boats and crews.
The fast race, however, was not an easy one. As winds changed in velocity and direction, crews were constantly changing sails and gibing to take advantage of the situation.
Restless’s skipper, Ray Hobbs, attributes the good performance to the improved boat and state of the art new mainsail. The latter acquisition was made possible because of the sponsorship of Central Queensland University and Wilson HTM.
Apart from the start, which saw Restless in a prime position close to Xena and ahead of Bobsled, the race was a lonely and trying affair. With few yachts in sight, the loss of good competition when Addiction broke its rig and frequent sail changes, the Restless crew worked hard to pace themselves.
Although the boat performed well, the breezy conditions did not allow Restless to carry its biggest masthead spinnaker for which it was handicapped. So, Restless paid the penalty without being able to benefit from the extra sail area.
Restless next major event is the Rosslyn Bay to Mackay Ocean Yacht Race early in May. The 176 mile race can be tough specially in strong winds because the 6 metre tides, when against the wind, make the seas rougher than in the Capricorn waters. Yet, in light winds, fighting the strong tides becomes a mental rather than physical battle.
