RYCT Dinghy Group - New School Group Learn to Sail program

The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania's Dinghy Group has begun it School Sailing Program for 2011.

To reach a new audience the RYCT is running a weekday schools Learn to Sail Program.


With the clubs new fleet of 10 Optimists, the Dinghy Group is hoping to attract some new participants into their weekend sailing program as well. Training and Development of the new juniors will be a focus of the Dinghy Group over the coming season.

Participation is key to developing new sailor's to our sport and hopefully some may progress through the Pathways, but the main thing is that we just get people sailing.

The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania's Dinghy Group has the capacity to run school sailing every day of the week and the first group to sign up for a Program is Collegiate.


21 Collegiate School girls in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be taking part in a Learn to Sail program in term 3 with the RYCT. RYCT Sailing Manager Richard Scarr took an Optimist to the school on Monday 30th to introduce the boat to the girls.

The six week program on Tuesday afternoons goes for three hours. There is an Instructor ratio of 6:1, Optimists carry two people per boat. This course is designed to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to small boat sailing for novices. The course includes an introduction to fundamental boat handling skills and essential knowledge that will allow participants the freedom of sailing small boats with guidance from the Instructor or Coach.

Dates: 4th October, 11th October, 18th October, 25th October, 1st November, 8th November 2011.
