RS200 SW Ugly Tour at Starcross YC

The RS200 Open Meeting took place on the 5th November at Starcross YC amid the best possible conditions. The event was also the final round of the secondhanddinghies.com SW Ugly Tour for this year.

The twenty-five competing boats from seven clubs revelled in classic conditions. A bolt steady northerly straight down the length of the estuary blowing 14-20 knots all afternoon gave superb conditions downwind. There were uniform blue skies with sunshine making many reach for the sun cream with total disbelief - this is November and it is 15 degrees!

On top of this in the glorious weather the beautiful setting of Starcross was shown to the maximum. And then PRO Russ Gibbs and his team did a star bar job with spot on courses, start lines, race lengths and sharp turn arounds so four quality races were completed in just over three hours. Yes you get the picture your reporter loved the day!!

The racing was really the story of three boats top performances. Eddie - I love light shifty winds - Whitehead/Alice Kingsnorth recovered from their nightmare performances at Chew Valley and Burghfield to blitz the fleet in a truly emphatic way. Showing the fleet how to start and giving a master class in upwind sailing Eddie and Alice were in the lead in the first three races by the first leeward gate to win by huge margins.

Pete Vincent/Charlotte - only two hours sleep - Cotter had the cheek to lead at first windward mark in the final race and at the leeward gate but once Eddie/Alice sneaked by on second beat they disappeared again. I get the impression Eddie would take these conditions to every event next year along with Chews beer and Starcross chips!

In fourth and fifth place overall were bronze fleet sailors Chris Bower/Ian Mairs (Parkstone) and Dave Sweet/Sophie Singleton (Chew VLSC) who sailed out of their skin to produce their results of the season beating many gold fleet and all silver fleet sailors. Chris and Ian’s second in the first race was a particularly fine result.

Apart from these boats Pete ‘Oohhhh Noooo’ Vincent/Charlotte messy crew Cotter and John Teague/Pete ‘git’ Cruickshank had their now obligatory close tussle ending up tied on points for second overall with John/cannot bring myself to mention his name taking second on basis they had one more second whereas on discard they would have been thrashed not that I am bitter!

In the silver division Tony and young Zach Freer just won in seventh overall just ahead of Darren McNamara /Naomi Pound and Starcross’s Mark and Rebecca Elkington.

Many thanks to Starcross for such a fine day; roll on the secondhanddinghies.com SW Ugly Tour next year.
