Gavin Brady, Tactician, BMW Oracle Racing on their two walk-overs today: 'It was one of those days when you were trying to sail really conservatively, and sometimes when you sail that way you sail your best. Our weather team nailed it today and got all the shifts dead right before the start. We just wanted to get 98 out in front and then just stay between our opposition and the mark, because today was definitely a day not to take any risks otherwise. On days like this when the wind is not down on the water it can change on you really quickly off Valencia.'
Rafa Trujillo, trimmer +39 Challenge on not sailing with their repaired mast: 'Today we couldn’t step the repaired mask because we had a problem with the jumpers and preferred not to risk it. Tomorrow we will try and have it for the race against Emirates Team New Zealand. We knew our boat was stronger with more wind but were surprised we were so slow with conditions like today. Under seven knots we are simply slow'.
Team Shosholoza (RSA), Mark Sadler, skipper on a unique moment: 'Today was historical - the first African team to win a match in the Louis Vuitton Cup. It’s fantastic. We knew that the match against Victory Challenge would be difficult but that a win was possible, but we are obviously very happy with our victory over the Germans. We now have to beat teams like Mascalzone, Desafio, Areva or +39 Challenge. And even if reaching the Semi Finals is ambitious, we are still going to aim for it and do our utmost to get there.'
Terry Hutchinson, Tactician, Emirates Team New Zealand on being beaten by Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team, and the relative speed of their boats: 'I would put them on the favoured side pretty much the whole time so...if we were in the disadvantaged position for 2.6 miles and we were only three boats behind them [at the top mark], then I’d probably take 92.'
Torben Grael, Tactician Luna Rossa Challenge on tough conditions for racing: 'In the second race the Swedes started better than us, but we wanted the right side where we expected to find more pressure, and we passed them. It sounds easy to do, but I can assure you that its not. In these conditions the races are very difficult because as soon as a boat gets some pressure it changes radically'.
Areva Challenge (FRA), Sébastien Col, helmsman on their first day: 'Its a good start. We still want to dig our heels in and find our reflections. But we are really happy with our performance today and it was good to be back racing. We have modified the boat and have made progress in a very short time. Our boat isn’t the best in these conditions or in the breeze, it is average.'
Richard Mason, Backstay grinder, Victory Challenge on close competition: 'The first challenge we had was shaking the cobwebs out after sitting around for four days! The South Africans are quick! At times we had some very good line-ups. The biggest thing to come out of today was how close this regatta is going to be. It’s going to be very closely fought and there are not big margins out there with any of the boats. Luna Rossa got the right early and just stayed and extended on us… with the shifts there weren’t too many passing lanes…it’s disappointing but we are happy with the crew work and the way the boat went. It’s a good building block for tomorrow.'
John Cutler, Desafío Español, about the penalty: 'We entered on port and wanted the right. We thought we got room but the umpires didn’t. We were relaxed because you can get a big lead in light air and we got the right sails and were confident on the side we chose. The race was very relaxed'.
Flavio Flavini, helmsman Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team on a victorious first day racing: 'Of course we started in the best and quite unexpected way. Today was one of those days that if you can take home one win and one loss then you can’t complain either. Now we have to make sure we don’t throw away two points in the next races.'
David Dellenbaugh, Tactician United Internet Team Germany on losing the first two races: 'we would rather have won at least one, but it wasn’t completely terrible. We didn’t expect to be as fast as BMW Oracle and were close to them on the first beat. But we didn’t get the shift we expected as we had thought and they just extended. Against Shosholoza we were pretty close in speed but they leapt ahead of us at the beginning and we couldn’t catch them once they were in control'.
China Team (CHN), Pierre Mas, helmsman and skipper on a difficult début: 'It’s our first real racing situation duel against an opponent with the new boat because we haven’t trained with any other team. Today we felt quite excited and have discovered some manoeuvres that we do really well. We took a penalty against Luna Rossa because we didn’t manage the dial-up and couldn’t get away.'
