Despite several late withdrawals a highly competitive fleet of 15 Impulses descended upon the Hervey Bay Sailing Club during the October long weekend to contest the ninth Queensland Impulse State Championships.

Competitors travelled from fleets in Gladstone, the Brisbane River, Moreton Bay and Lake Macquarie (NSW), to take part in the series. Several brand new professionally built boats took part in the series and performed well.

Conditions ranged from light on Saturday to moderate on Sunday with a cancellation of all racing on Monday due to excessive wind and wave conditions.

The winner of the series was defending State Champion Dave Harrison in 'Cosmosoarus', followed by interstate visitor Gary Bellamy in 'Ship Faced' who was closely followed in third place by Andrew Turnbull in 'Imposter'. The handicap winner was State President Keith Briers in his new Formula Sailcraft built 'Sapphire', ladies champion was Rebecca Price in 'Sparrow' and consistent sailing by Jonathon Syme in 'Wild Fire' secured him the junior prize.

A large contingent of Qld Impulses are making the long haul to South Australia to compete in the National Championships at Largs Bay Sailing Club over the Christmas/New Year period, and preparations are well underway for the following nationals to be hosted by the Queensland Impulse Association at Keppel Bay Sailing Club, Yeppoon, for the 2014/2015 season.
