Powerboat GP RYA British Championships - Grand opening

by Emma Slater on 29 Apr 2013
- The 2013 Powerboat GP RYA British Championship RYA Powerboat racing
Powerboat GP RYA British Championships season opener takes place this weekend at Carr Mill Dam, St Helens. The event kicks off on 4th May to 5th May as the racers head to the Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club for the first round of the competition.

Over 40 teams are expected at the Powerboat GP Lancashire Grand Prix for the opening round and will battle for all important points in six different powerboat racing classes.

Amongst the racers will be 12 junior racers competing in the GT15 class. Junior Driver Charlotte Newton will be hoping that racing on home water will give her an early advantage in the championship whilst she battles for vital championship points against reigning British Champion, Peters & May’s Ben Jelf and a strong challenge from Thomas Mantripp.

In the GT30 class Top Cat Racing Driver Jordan Muckles will be focussed on getting the best possible start to his campaign to improve his Bronze Medal Championship finish in 2013. Muckles knows he’ll have fierce competition from Natalie Craddock who will be eager to make amends for narrowly missing out on the 2012 title crown.

An impressive 12 F2 Catamarans will make the start line for the Lancashire Grand Prix and the battle will be immense. Reigning British Champion Malcolm Goodman of JPL Racing will be set on putting gremlins of 2012 behind him and aim to start the season off on the winning foot. However, with a World Class fleet of racers all snapping at his heels this will be no easy task and there will be many drivers including Paul Balfour, Matt Palfreyman & Steve Hoult aiming to make it to the first turn mark ahead of Goodman and to keep him in their prop wash.

The Powerboat GP Championship will once again be joined by Tiff Needell and the television cameras from Green Light TV as they follow every twist, turn, flip and spill in the championship for the Powerboat GP television series featured on Sky Sports.

The on water action will commence on Saturday morning at 10am as the racers battle it out for the all important pole positions during timed qualifying before heading into the weekends heats.

The event is free to public and offers some great viewing of the fast and furious action.
