Ingrid Abery images from the start of the Portimão Global Ocean Race. The fleet started in Portimão on Portugal’s lovely Algarve coast bound for Cape Town 7,000 miles away. This new around-the-world race, open to 40 footers, both Class 40’s and Open 40’s sailed either solo or double-handed, is a new concept in global offshore racing.

Belgium’s Michel Kleinjans leads on the first day.
